Robinson JV upsets Yorktown, 2-0

FAIRFAX, VA - Apr. 24, 2009 - In what was a game that could have gone either way, the
Robinson Rams manage to pull off an upset over the Yorktown Patriots 2-0, by scoring two
second half goals on Friday, April 24.
Previously, being postponed because of inclement weather a week ago, the weather
conditions were much better for soccer, with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 80s.
For the first twenty minutes of play, it was all back in forth in the midfield before a
breakaway in the 22nd minute. Robinson’s center forward Matt Cevasco made a shot towards the
upper right corner of the goal, just barely missing it. In response, an unidentified midfielder from
Yorktown would go on a large breakaway and struck a shot towards the lower left corner of the
goal, ending in a shot off the post.

As the second half picked up things got dicey between the Robinson defense and the
Yorktown offense, as Robinson goalie Gunnar Bedford got injured in his right eye. Bedford
would play out the rest of the game.
In the 64th minute of play, things would pick up for Robinson. Left forward Ben Merino
stole a pass from the Yorktown defense and scored a chip shot right over the goalie’s hands. The
Rams secured their lead and a victory in the 81st minute with a goal by Cevasco.
In the end Robinson upset Yorktown, although players on Robinson claimed they weren’t
picking it up. “We started off slow, but in the end we finally picked it up to take the win that we
needed,” said Josh Mehler, Robinson’s coach.
In the opinion of Robinson’s captain, Carlos Padilla he said it was a matter of possession,
“We all worked like a team and we played better than Yorktown, because they had no strong
possession.”
The result gives the Rams a respectable record of (6-2-0) and gives the Patriots a record of
(3-3-2). Robinson’s next game is against the Oakton Cougars on Tuesday, April 28; while
Yorktown’s next game is against the Falls Church Jaguars. Times are both at 5:30 PM for JV and
7:00 PM for Varsity.
Time of game: 1 hour, 32 minutes
Attendance: 67 weather: Sunny -and- 86 degrees
